Beginner's Guide: ISO Ratings
The ISO rating that you set on your camera has a major effect on how your images appear and on the overall quality of your results. Yet it’s a feature that has many beginners confused as to what it means and how it works and even more experienced photographers may not be fully aware of how the ISO rating can be used to get the very best from their DSLR. This month’s Beginner’s Guide explains what the ISO rating is, how it affects your exposures and how you easily take control to ensure that you set it to give the best possible results every time. As well as general ISO advice, we provide hints and tips on which ISO ratings are best for different subjects and scenarios, as well as an insight into how some of our regular contributors use ISO ratings to deliver the best quality images in their professional lives
Main DSLR test: Canon EOS 450D & Pentax K20D
Advanced amateurs and enthusiasts are spoilt for choice when it comes to which DSLR to own, especially as leading brands are introducing their next wave of cameras. Canon has released the compact, lightweight 12-megapixel EOS 450D, while Pentax has launched the more substantial 14.6-megapixel K20D. Both vary in terms of size, handling, features and importantly, price, with the Canon costing £600 and the Pentax £900. Daniel Lezano tries out both to see what’s on offer and how well they perform
Digital Convert: Eolo Perfido
Young, gifted and ‘en Vogue’ – literally, Eolo Perfido is the master of modern portraiture. Contemporary yet classical, his work is much more than a technical exercise. Here, he tells us how he accidentally fell in love with photography and turned it into a career
Make Something of it! A stiletto
Is the bad weather getting you down? Are you struggling for photographic ideas and inspiration? Then why not see how you can get on shooting an ordinary object and creating an extraordinary result. Each month, that’s exactly the challenge we set three photographers. Why? Well, we want to show you that it’s possible to produce a great shot of literally any subject, and hope our efforts will open your mind to the photographic possibilities that await if you stretch your creative skills to the limit. This month’s subject was a stiletto! Before turning the page to see the images our experts produced, ask yourself, what would you have done?
Photo Adventures: Canada
We’ve a double dose of winter wildlife in our latest Photo Adventure as Matt Henry talks to Miguel Lasa about two recent trips. The first took him to the depths of the Tundra to see 85-stone, eight-foot polar bears and the second to Ottawa to catch the rare and magnificent Snowy Owl
