This is the perfect focal length for timid subjects like insects, allowing a practical working distance that minimises the risk of frightening them away!

Award-winning nature photographer and regular contributor Ross Hoddinott tests Sigma’s tele-macro lens

To get up-close and personal with the miniature world, there is no substitute for a dedicated macro lens. Specialist lenses are not cheap, so it is tempting to opt for an independent make. I’ve long been a fan of Sigma optics, especially the EX range, with their solid construction and high optical quality. There are five dedicated macro lenses in the range: 50mm, 70mm, 105mm, 150mm and 180mm. The advantage of using shorter focal lengths is that they are light and compact, so are perfect for shooting handheld. However, they don’t provide a generous working distance. While this might not matter when shooting static subjects, it can prove impractical for wildlife. A tele-macro is a better choice if you wish to shoot tiny bugs and beasties. A longer focal length compresses perspective better than a shorter lens and this helps to throw background detail out of focus.
Sigma’s 150mm macro boasts an impressive list of specifications. Other than its large maximum aperture of f/2.8 and ability to give 1:1 (life-size) reproduction, it boasts two Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements, which control colour aberrations, ensuring high image quality. The Super Multi Coating is designed to reduce flare and ghosting. Combined, they provide correction for lateral chromatic aberration. The lens also features internal focusing (IF), which is useful when using filters and when shooting wildlife close-ups, as it greatly reduces the risk of disturbance. Image quality is superb, with bitingly sharp results throughout the aperture range.
The compact size (137mm in length) and low weight (895g) are appealing, but this is not a lens best used handheld, which is why it is fitted with a detachable tripod collar. If the situation dictates, I will still use the lens handheld, but as it doesn’t feature image stabilisation technology, achieving sharp results without the support of a tripod relies on accurate focusing and a shutter speed upwards of 1/200sec.
I usually rely on manual focusing whenever I’m shooting close-ups, as it allows greater precision and creative control. However, I flicked the lens on to AF for the purpose of the test, and found the autofocusing rapid and responsive. The HSM made focusing ultra-fast, quiet and smooth. It searched a little in low light, but that is to be expected. It also has a focus limiter switch, which can be used to restrict the focal range that the autofocus system will use.
Shop around and you’ll find this lens for around £400, which is great value for money.

Verdict
This is the perfect focal length for timid subjects like insects, allowing a practical working distance that minimises the risk of frightening them away. Despite its focal length and fast maximum aperture, the lens has quite a compact design. Its nicely balanced, well-constructed and the tripod collar makes it easy to switch from a horizontal to vertical format. Image quality is excellent, capturing very fine detail. If you’re new to macro, the lighter 70mm or 105mm versions might be better suited, but enthusiasts and pros should find this lens meet their demands.
