PocketWizard Plus II Transceiver kit review
Guide price: £370/ Street price £280
Wireless flash and DSLR trigger with four channel selection
There are certain products in the photography world that are universally admired and revered. PocketWizard’s transceivers have crept onto the wish list of all studio photographers aiming to make off-camera flash that little bit easier and – after testing them for over six months – I’m happy to say they’ve made it on to my wish list, too!
So what do these little wonders actually do? Well, it’s pretty simple. You stick one on your DSLR’s hotshoe and then the other attaches, usually via a sync lead, to your studioflash or portable flashgun. The benefits are obvious – the photographer is untethered, rather than having to be connected to an awkward sync lead.
Finally free to move around the studio without fear of pulling over the studioflash or tripping up an unsuspecting model is a liberating experience. What’s more, the operating range of the PocketWizard transceivers is a whopping 1600ft.
Additional features include a four-channel selector, imperative if you at a media event and there are other photographers using the same kit. Plus, they run on two AA batteries that least for
an eternity.
Another highly desirable application for the PocketWizards is that you can also use them to trigger your DSLR's shutter remotely. This function is perfect for wildlife snappers, wishing to set-up a camera trap with the ability to trigger the camera from a good distance away.
Although the PocketWizards are expensive, you’ll come to wonder how you ever managed without them. Plus, £370 is a lot cheaper than repairing a model that has just tripped over your sync lead!
Verdict
A genuine must-have piece of photographic equipmen,t which will make working in the studio a much more pleasant experience. Quite expensive, but worth every penny.
