Most of us who enjoy shooting macro will be familiar with how tricky focusing can be, especially when light is limited. Well, this neat piece of kit is an ideal, easy-to-use addition to a close-up shooter's arsenal, as it delivers a constant light that improves viewing and capture.

While it has its drawbacks, such as only having two light levels – high and low – it's a good accessory for photographers who don't want the hassle of flash settings or the expense of a ringflash. Although you have limited creative control over the light output, the 29cm flexible arm allows you to contort the light in almost any direction as well as position it in front of the lens for shadow-free illumination.
It's also non-intrusive, so you can get as close as you want to living subjects without the worry of frightening them off with a burst of flash, hopefully helping you to get that all-important shot. It slides in and can be secured into your DSLR's hotshoe with ease and if you want to use the macro light off-camera, it can also be attached to a tripod via a 1/4in mounting thread.

Running off three AAA batteries, the 65mm-diameter macro ring does provide enough constant light to aid focusing, but is not strong enough to be used as the sole light source. Even when accompanied with natural light or a second source, it didn't provide enough light to work handheld. Its compact design and plastic features are, however, deceptive as the build quality is sound, though perhaps not worthy of its £100 price tag.

Verdict
A handy piece of kit to have in your bag for macro shots as in most cases it will provide enough light for tricky focusing.

Like: The unit's flexibility, its compact design and  ease of use.
Dislike: Not much, but it could benefit from being slightly cheaper and  provide stronger lighting.
