Digital SLR Photography test: January 2009

Multi-function printer with CF and SD card slots

This new-look Epson multi-function device is the most stylish we’ve seen so far, and its stunning design means it will take pride of place in your office, lounge or bedroom. It’s a three-in-one machine, offering a high-spec six-ink photo printer, 2400dpi scanner and copier. Plus, it has built-in Wi-Fi, allowing you to connect to it from anywhere in the home, along with Ethernet access if you want to plug it in to a network. If that’s not enough to whet your appetite, the PX700W works as a standalone device too, with card slots for CompactFlash, SD, xD and MemoryStick; the 2.5in screen and control panel allow you to view and select your images, then use them with any of the device's functions. This works really well for JPEG files, but it wouldn’t take any of the Raw files we tried. On the software side, it comes complete with Epson’s Easy Print module, PrintCD, Event Manager, Easy Photo Print, and EpsonNet configuration software. One unique software feature is the ability to add handwritten text to greetings cards by using the scanner, and there are extra functions for fans of scrapbooking. Though there’s a little whirring noise on start up, printing is fairly quiet and incredibly quick, taking just one minute for a full colour A4 print, and just a minute and 15 seconds for a borderless print. When printing from a memory card, this slows to three minutes, which is still bearable. Print quality is very good, if a little punchy from the Epson vivid colour management. This is one of two new multi-functions from Epson, the other being the PX800FW, with
higher resolution scanner and fax. Both are strong competition
for Canon’s multi-function range – though the Canon
base Wi-Fi model is cheaper.

Verdict
A great package for all the family but faces some stiff competition at lower prices.
Great prints
Lots of connectivity
Some rivals are cheaper
