This handy little gadget was designed to get around a problem that often plagues outdoor photographers' pictures – wonky horizons. The ActionLevel is an electronic spirit level, using colour LEDs rather than the ‘bubble’ found in standard spirit levels. Simply slip it on the hotshoe, switch it on and use the ‘traffic light’ system to determine the correct horizon. A red LED on each extreme shows you’re well out; amber towards the centre means it’s almost level, and the central green light means that the horizon in your frame is perfectly level. Two small buttons on the top allow you to adjust the sensitivity of the level and the brightness of the LEDs, as well as activate a power-save mode. The Action Spirit Level is powered by two CR1220 batteries, and six are supplied in the pack.
Why spend £30 on one of these over a standard £10 level? Well, it’s far easier to use to determine a straight horizon, especially if your eyesight is poor. It’s also a far more fashionable accessory than a standard spirit level, especially for those of us who love a good gadget!
Verdict:A relatively inexpensive accessory that’s simple to use and does its job well.
