George Rodger (Magnum) Exhibition
A major new exhibition of War photographs from Magnum Photos co-founder George Rodger is being shown at Imperial War Museum North
A major new exhibition of War photographs from Magnum Photos co-founder George Rodger is being shown at Imperial War Museum North between 9 February and 27 April 2008. George Rodger is one of the most influential photographers of all time, and his war photographs are among his most important work, helping to create many of the standards by which today’s photojournalists still operate. Rodger was a photographer for Life magazine during the Second World War, and these photographs document his personal journey of 75,000 miles through all the major war zones of the time. The experiences he underwent whilst taking these images, and the harrowing scenes he witnessed, especially in the Belsen concentration camp, made him resent war and seek to abandon war photography altogether. These amazing images illustrate the horror and despair that the photographer felt as he took them. 100 photographs will be displayed in various formats alongside a documentary film, interviews and some of Rodger’s personal objects, including a selection of his prized cameras.. Entry to the exhibition is free, and a few guided tours with the curator will be available at no cost.
